How to Poach an Egg

I was watching an episode of Chopped the other night, and one of the contestants decided to add a poached egg to their plate. I saw the judges ooh and ahh over how perfectly the egg was poached and it got me thinking… how hard could it really be to poach an egg? I had only ever poached an egg in one of those neat poaching pans before, so I set out to teach myself how to poach an egg without buying a new pan.

It turns out, it’s actually really easy! Here are instructions for how to poach an egg in a regular pot.

Step 1: Fill a small pan about halfway with water (see photo for amount). Cover pan. Set on high.

Step 2: Bring temperature to just under boiling. It should look like this:

Step 3: Turn off heat. Carefully crack eggs just above the waterline (without burning yourself!) so that they glide easily into the water. They should look something like this:

Step 4: Cover the eggs and set your kitchen timer for 4 minutes. (For 4 eggs in a larger pan, I found 5 minutes worked well.)

Step 5: Remove cover and scoop out the eggs with a slotted spoon.

Step 6: Eat and enjoy!
